General Audience feedback.

Overall we ganthered alot of information mainly through Nmts such as youtube facebook and other various social networking sites. Our feedback from our audience came from a range who listen to funk as a primary source of music aswell as just overall music listeners. This helped as it pointed out how well we pulled off a funk genred music video as well as a general feedback from the audience. Some members of our audience were media students aswell this allowed a source of feedback that allowed us to improve our music video aswell as the production for example we gained information on how to improve our narrative as well as the editing itself in terms of lighting and sound levels as you can see aboveas well as below...

The Final Magazine advert

This was the developed idea of one of our magazine adverts we decided to do this so that we could compare both it still shares the idea of colours representing different emotions,we didnt decide to go for this idea as it didnt portray much from the album itself and its idea we wanted to portray.
This is the main magazine advert as you can see we have developed it into a real life
Character instead of just the animated one as you can see it shares the relation to the idea for example the use of different colours and the postion and stance in which the main character is standing . we changed the font slightly to relate to the genre more in the sense that it looks like it comes from the earlier era of the 80's and shares relation to funk albums from that era.We also kept with using differences in colour when displaying key information as you can see the main title is black when the background and further down you can see that the rest of track listings

TYPICAL GENRE CONVENTIONS

Through research we gained alot of information about codes and conventions about different genres of music rock and funk are the genrs we decided to discuss as they are the most relavent to out music video.

ROCK:

We found that a agreed convention of rock was that it was more performanced based rather than a narrative one.We also found that shot compostions were also similar for instance in most rock videos there a close ups of the instruments the members are playing.we also found that most rock videos have very flashy lights they may tie in sink with the lead singer who the camera time would be most spent on singing rhythm.Lighting may also seem dominant in rock videos as they can portray the image a band is going for e.g a darker lighting could be used for the darker side of rock for bands such as metallica.

The video itself may just consist of medium and long shots of the band performing at the start of the video.

FUNK
Funk is similar to the rock genre in the sense that its not realy narrative based but more of a performance side of genre when concerning music videos.Lighting and general colour scemes of the funk genre tend to be much more bright and colourfull rather than dark.Tempo wise of the cutting rhythm can vary from a laid back pace if not an up tempo feel to it. In terms of shot composition it seems that funk shares the same with rock genres as it tends to be just the front man of the band in most of the frame of the shot with remainder band members there. The biggest difference is that funk tends to be filmed as a live performance rather than just a music video specific for that song.

NARATIVE THEORY

Narrative theory simplified is just the breakdown of a narrative in a text developed by 4 heorists all called:Propp,todorov,levi-strauss and barthes. The narrative helps defie the story of the film itself After researching these theorists we tried to relate to some of there branches in narrative theory.

  • In terms of todorovs theory of eqirilibrium our film starts off whith a simple happy egilibrium but then ends in a sad one as the main character is reminded of his past friend when doin this we arnt realy challenging any funk videos as most do not consist of any narrative as they are mainly performanced based.

  • Our music video was woven with motifs and performance for example one of the main mottifs is the colour orange used to represent the emotion of arrogance, the film has short clips of the artist performing the song itself which allowed time for the narrative for the narrative to be also shown.

DIGIPACK ANALYSIS

This is a quick analysis of digipacks and existing ones I have also analysed a digi pack concerning our genre of choice.

FINISHED MUSIC PROMO

This is now the finished edition as you can see we have added alot more footage such as a narrative part to the video.
  • In the chorus the timelapse now has eddited parts of performance in it we decided to do this in order to have two aspects of a music video.
  • We also fixed up some of the unsynced timing of the cuts with the track itself this allowed more time for more of the narrative to be portrayed.
  • The problem it still sefferes is that the quality of the video when uploaded seems distorted not allowing much of the actions and lip syncs to be seen.

FINAL MAGAZINE ADVERT.

This is the final magazine advert we decided as a group would work.
It still shares a few factors as the other ideas proposed such as the relationship in colour
and the merging of all colours showing the relation to the album title and the narrative
of him having mixed emotions. We decided to improve it by making the background simply all black to show that he is almost in his own world of mixed up emotions, because of this we then had to make the information tab at the bottom of the page white to show complete contrast in the advert itself and the information about it.This worked well as the colours Black and white tend to be shown as bold and inportant colours there for standing out more.

Semiotics theory of signs.

The theory of semiotics is based on the idea of sign processes and communication, this theory diverts into three seperate branches them being

Semantics: Relation between signs and the things to which they refer to.
Syntactics: Relations among signs in formal structures.
Pragmatics: Relation between signs and their effects on those (people) who use them

The relation between semiotics and our project is that the main character shares relation with some of the colours presented in the magazine advert for example in our magazine advert the main charater has a orange coloured top and blue coloured bottoms witch is also the same colours shown in the rest of the advert. The idea of pragmatics helped us catch viewers eye by all vibrant colours shown this mainly worked as the background is all black in contrast to the rest of the image creating a more bold effect. we also considered this when using a black on white effect for the information on release date so that it becomes more easier to read.

FIRST INITIAL IDEAS FOR OUR MAGAZINE ADVERTS

As a group we disscussed and created a few ideas on what we thought
a magazine advert for our genre of music (funk) should look like. After our reserch into
similar adverts we picked up upon a few characteristics we needed to inclued in order to relate
to our genre.Through out these ideas factors such as the same colours and font are kept consistant.

In this image we have the main character drawn as a stick man surrounded by a room of colours relating back to the album name "the colour clash".The reason we decided to do this is because the main theme of our video is about a depressed yet , secretly arrogant person ,the colours in this advert then represent different types of emotions this then ties in with the idea of mixed emtions used in our video. The way this then relates to funk is that the nature of funk itself has allways been considered to a very colourfull and vibrent feel about it.The main reason why we didnt decide to use this was the fact that we were limited by the design programme given as it didnt allow us to give the full effect we wanted to give to our audience.

This idea had more of a album cover approach towards selling it the theme of colour still stands present in this idea but the font is a little more revealing to stand out more to audience and also to feed information about release dates and links of information to them. The colour in this idea was mainly used as an attraction factor rather then a relation to the music video itself.

In this unfinished idea our initial approach was to have a ceeling ofidevidual colours almost raining down to form a puddle at witch the main character would be looking down into. This like the other ideas is ment to have the reacuring idea of colours having a relation to his emotions main ideas being blue havingdown/uppset feel were as orange the main motiff in our film.

This is a more developed take on the previous idea, as you can see the colours illistrate the main
idea desiered for the colour clash idea shown by the mix of colours in the puddle.

DIGGIN OUT MUSIC VIDEO (ROUGH CUT)

As you can see this is a very rough version of our music video,
currently in this version you can see not much of a narrative is displayed
and most ideas have yet to be put into the film. What we will keep the same is the cutting rate as it is almost dead on point with the music, what also works well is the camera shots we have used to as they tell parts of the story fast which then saves us time when making it.During the chorus you can see that the tie lapse repeates itself all the way through it which doesnt work well as it can be boring so we have decided to add a performance part to it to help add to the asspects of funk music videos mainly consisting of performace values.

This is the lyrical content of our music video.
Unfortunately after we gained access to the song it self we did not gain the lyrical content with it ,so as a group we listened and scribed the lyrics ourselves.

MAGAZINE ADVERT ANALYSIS

THE KILLERS ADVERT.

  • Imeadiately the font used is the same used in all the other name titles displayed on the other bands albums. The detail of the font looks simillar to what of stage lights used at a grand place such as the royal albert hall displayed in this picture this imagery works well with the font displayed.

  • This also suggests that the band has always been seen as a high and grand status in there career so far this can also be said by the colour used as purple and ,gold like trees are used which are assosiated with welth and fame this is also played apon by the words royal being used.

  • Compared to the general coloursceam of the background being a dark toned theam the font is the complete opposite as it is all in white which is clever as the font doesnt need to be in bright colours to attract attention like most other adverts acting almost like a challenge to others.

  • Information is also sectioned in different sizes in order to show seperateness in information easier for the audience to regester for example the track listings are in a moderate size
were as the release date it self is slightlly larger as it has more inportance, this works well as you can quickly understand the poster without fully looking into it.

This is another analysis of the steriophonics magazine advert.

  • As you can see the advert itself is very abstract which helps draw attention to it as
it gets the audience questioning its meaning which is good as its more than just a "magazine Advert" but also holds a deaper meaning within it.The picture of them sitting in a unsettled ocean wile eating breakfast ands and explains the title of the advert by this imagery.

  • The colour of the background blends and works with the advertisement well as the top half of the advert is more lighter than the bottom because of this they changed the font at the top to be black as the background is white were as the bottom half the font is white allowing a more clear stand out to the audience. This then brings attention to highlighted information on the album name aswell as release dates easier for the audience.

  • The font used in this advert relates to the album name as it is a very simple and plane font adding to the idea of "the calm" part of the title.

  • Doing further research i have found that the sub title under the Band name was also used as a world war 2 quote for the hard working strugglers of the uk at that time.
  • The general colour scheam of the background is one of a dull nature shown by colours such as gray and dark blues and blacks, this gives the sence that it may have quite serious and dull moods expreced within the album itself.
